How to Choose the Right Patio Door: French Doors vs. Sliding Patio Doors

The right patio door can accentuate your view and indoor-outdoor space.

It can also help use less energy, block outdoor noise and become the center of attention in your home.

But starting a replacement project can feel like a big undertaking. There a lot of patio door types to pick from.

French Doors

French patio doors swing open for an unimpeded view of the outdoors. This double-door style can make your room feel brighter and larger. It lets in ample natural light.

You can choose how wide to open them—just a crack or completely—to let in cool breezes during the summer. Large panes of glass capture the sun’s glow during the winter, helping keep your room cozy.

French-style doors open inward or outward, depending on the model. They need more clearance to totally open—particularly for doors that open inward.

They can open more fully than a single-panel sliding door. A sliding door can only open to one side. It’s also constricted by its frame.
