How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Windows are vital to your home’s beauty and comfort; they provide a glorious view of your outdoor space, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your home. Because they are so key to a home, they go through a lot of action. It’s a good idea to keep your windows clean so that they keep functioning as they should.

Window glass can get dirty pretty quickly, particularly with little hands or pets in the home, but fortunately glass cleaning isn’t that hard. Many Pella Windows and Doors windows have easy-clean features that also make it painless to clean the exterior of your windows from inside your home, too. Looking for an easy, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows and Doors suggests:

  1. Start by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that collects on the sill and ledges will stay there for a long time otherwise, and doing this first will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. Make sure not to use the same cleaning duster that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment over the side of your window screen that faces inside. You can also use this vacuum piece to suck up any leftover dirt and dust along your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to get your glass clean. You can make your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Apply your cleaner generously to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from multiple different directions for the best clean.
  4. Give your windows time to air dry and then rinse your glass with clean water if there are any streaks left.

Here are some more tips, too! We suggest that you clean your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution too fast and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows and Doors professionals select microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your beautiful view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean all year long.
